Roles, Responsibilities and Decision Rights
Online Learning Program
Enterprise Data Capability
Develop the clarity to understand who is responsible, who is accountable and where decisions should be made.
Organisational data depends on more than good processes and capable systems. It depends on people understanding the part they play, the authority they hold, and when decisions need to involve others.
Through the organisational world of Meridian Group, this course explores how roles, responsibilities and decision rights operate across people, teams and governance structures, where ambiguity creates risk, and how greater clarity supports effective stewardship, confident decisions and organisational accountability.
Program Overview
Modern organisations depend upon people working across teams, functions and governance structures to make decisions and deliver outcomes. Yet responsibility can become unclear, accountability may be assumed rather than established, and people can find themselves making decisions without knowing whether they have the authority to do so.
Roles, Responsibilities and Decision Rights takes a practical, scenario-based approach to understanding how responsibility, accountability and decision-making operate in modern organisations. Through the organisational world of Meridian Group, learners explore situations where roles overlap, responsibilities cross organisational boundaries, and the authority to act or decide is not always immediately clear.
Learners develop the judgement to distinguish between doing the work, being accountable for an outcome, contributing expertise and holding decision authority. They learn to recognise ambiguity, clarify who needs to be involved, and determine when they can act within their role and when a decision belongs elsewhere.
Is This Program Right for You?
This program is designed for professionals who work within, contribute to or depend upon organisational roles, responsibilities and decision-making structures, regardless of their position or technical background.
It is particularly suited to:
current and emerging Data Stewards;
managers and team leaders responsible for people, processes or organisational outcomes;
professionals working across teams, functions or organisational boundaries;
staff involved in projects, transformation initiatives or process improvement;
data, information, governance and assurance professionals;
professionals who contribute to, influence or implement organisational decisions; and
anyone seeking greater clarity about responsibility, accountability and decision authority in modern organisations.
No formal governance, data-stewardship or decision-rights experience is required.
What You'll Explore
Participants will explore:
why clarity of roles, responsibilities and decision rights matters;
the difference between responsibility, accountability, contribution and decision authority;
how roles and responsibilities operate across teams, functions and organisational boundaries;
why responsibility can become unclear even when formal roles exist;
how overlapping responsibilities and assumed authority can create organisational risk;
the relationship between expertise, accountability and the authority to make decisions;
how to recognise when a decision sits within your authority and when it belongs elsewhere;
how clear decision rights support effective escalation, coordination and governance; and
how to apply these principles within everyday organisational situations.
The Learning Experience
Roles, Responsibilities and Decision Rights combines interactive scenarios, branching video decisions, organisational records, practical knowledge checks and guided reflection.
Learners enter Meridian Group, a believable organisation where responsibilities cross team boundaries, expertise is distributed and the authority to act or decide is not always immediately clear. Through an ordinary organisational situation, learners experience the consequences of unclear responsibility and assumed authority before exploring the concepts behind them.
The course concludes with a practical workplace application that helps learners distinguish between responsibility, accountability, contribution and decision authority, and determine what they can act on, what requires coordination and what needs an authorised decision.
Learners can progress at their own pace, revisit the course throughout their access period and retain downloadable resources for continued workplace application.

Enterprise Data Capability
Enterprise Data Capability enables organisations to understand, manage and use information confidently across everyday operations, organisational decisions and changing technology environments.
Roles, Responsibilities and Decision Rights builds upon the stewardship mindset introduced through Fernleaf Learning’s Enterprise Data Capability pathway. It develops greater clarity around who does the work, who is accountable, who contributes expertise and who holds the authority to decide.
This foundation supports more advanced learning across data quality, lifecycle and lineage, projects and operations, and the long-term development of stewardship capability.
